Science Grade (Please IGNORE %'s on MiStar / ParentConnect.)
I. Components of Assessment Literacy
A. Formative Assessments (*10% of Science Grade)
1. practice activities that assess effort
2. in-class activities, labs, book work, worksheets
3. should be used by students to determine
where they're at in their understanding
B. Summative Assessment
1. activities that assess mastery and
comprehension
2. quizzes, tests, labs, reports & papers
a. quizzes (*30% of total grade)
1. *re-takes are possible (and in fact strongly encouraged when needed)
2. Hybrid Category - quizzes are supposed to be summative but
because of the re-take option, they're kind of formative as well
b. tests (*60% of total grade) - grades are final (ie NO re-takes)
II. 4 - Point Grading Scale
A. ALL items in the gradebook - formative and summative - are given a points
value of 0 to 4
B. purpose - the 4 Point Scale is more equitable
If a student takes a test on a bad day and 'bombs' it, the 4 point scale allows
him/her to raise his/her average in a more timely manner.
C. MiStar is NOT set up to use the 4 Point Scale so MiStar percentages are very
misleading; use the link below for a conversion chart

V. Extra Credit is not an option because it is contradicts the Assessment
Literacy philosophy.
(The way to get a good grade in Science is to understand the content!)
*At times of COMPLETE REMOTE LEARNING during the 2020-21 School Year, the following changes will occur:
A note on cheating...Collaboration is an important part of the scientific process but there is a distinct difference between working together and cheating. To avoid loss of credit and an in-school suspension, students should make sure that they express answers using their own words.
